Communication Strategies from Speech Therapists

Practical tips for conversations when you have hearing loss.

January 17, 2026|via NAD

Speech therapists who work with people with hearing loss have developed practical strategies that can make everyday conversations easier. Here are their top recommendations.

Before the Conversation

Position yourself so you can see the speaker's face. Good lighting helps. Reduce background noise when possible by turning off the TV or moving to a quieter spot.

During the Conversation

Don't be afraid to ask someone to repeat themselves. You can also ask them to rephrase rather than just repeat. "Can you say that another way?" often works better than "What?"

Advocating for Yourself

Let people know what helps you. "I hear better when you face me" or "Please speak a little slower" are clear, polite requests that most people are happy to accommodate.
